The I in Vagina is a simple retrospective of a young British artist who makes work based around themes of female identity and body image. Emma Buggy has a lot of interesting and educated things to say about woman and their relationship to their bodies, in particular their vaginas. Her sculptures, drawings and sketch's reflect the beauty of a part of the female body many women would rather not talk about. In these interviews she re encounters personal experiences of shame and discomfort with her own vagina and explains how her work is aiming to readdress issues surrounding women's self perception and acceptance of their vastly varied and beautiful vulvas. One of the many reasons Emma is concerned with this subject is due to the rise in women having labiaplasty (a plastic surgery procedure for altering the labia minora and the labia majora). Women and girls as young as 18 are surgically removing or altering part of their inner lips to conform with the currently warped standards of the female anatomy which have been set by airbrushed images in lads mags and pornography. This documentary explores her work and ideas, with the aim to showing that she is not just a shock artist, but a very current and outspoken young woman with something to say about how we interact with vaginas in a modern society.
